Shamanism is an ancient healing practice dating back 100,000 years and practiced in every country across the world. Shamanism is one of humankind's oldest and perhaps original forms of spirituality and healing, where we look to the spirits of ancestors, animals, plants and elements for help, guidance and healing.
Shamanic Practitioner/Shaman
A shamanic practitioner is a healer who moves into an altered state of consciousness or out of body state to access a non-ordinary reality in the spirit world for purposes of bringing back healing, power, and information. Shamans believe that all problems, physical, emotional or mental, have their root cause in spiritual imbalance. A shaman will use a variety of tools such as drums, rattles, smudge sticks, natural objects and sound such as voice to help them deeply connect with spirit and work with spirit to heal from a place of love light and integrity.
Non-Ordinary Reality/Spirit World
Non-ordinary reality is a term coined by Michael Harner, author of the book The Way of the Shaman. The term is used in Core Shamanism in reference to shamanic drumming, in which a shamanic practitioner plays a beat on a drum generally around eight beats per second. They use the repetitive pulse to enter into a theta state (the non-ordinary reality) in which they can communicate with spirit guides, power animals and other entities.
